The annual SESD conference will be held on March 17, 2010 (8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) in Philadelphia PA. Mark your calendars and come join us for a very informative, information sharing, activity driven conference. The conference will be held in conjunction with the NSTA national convention. Our strands this year will include discussions and presentations by professionals who are actively engaging students with disabilities into the science curriculum at all levels.
The presentations this year, to name just a few, will include:
- Dr. Greg Stefanich – Successful Practice and Resources for Students with Disabilities in
Science and Mathematics
- Dr. Michael Slavkin – Spiraled Curriculum: Transforming Teaching Professional Development
- Ms Laureen Summers – Growing up with a Disability; Inclusion and why it works
We have also extended an invitation to SESD conference participants to make a short 10 minute presentation on such topics as; inclusion in science classrooms, classroom science practices, strategies and/or any lessons that have proven successful in their individual classrooms. These can include individual success stories or a particular innovative idea that was implemented. Attached to a presentation is a $100.00 stipend. We would hope some of your teachers will accept the invitation to submit their ideas. The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, presentations to begin at 9:00 a.m.
Feel free to contact Patti Davidson at pdavidson@usi.edu for further information. Click here to download the pre-registration form which is in PDF format.
As every year, SESD is hosting the Science-Abled Breakfast Meeting at the annual conference of the National Science Teachers Association, an event that brings together teachers of disabled students, parents, science educators and scientists. At this meeting we will recognize the recipients of the Lifetime Service Award for Outstanding Contributions in Science Education for Students with Disabilities and the Lawrence Scadden Teacher of the Year Awards. The meeting also features presentations that highlight the educational experiences of students with disabilities and their contributions to science. A warm breakfast will be served.
This year our featured speaker will be Trinell Bowman, Program Manager for Alternate and Modified Assessment, Maryland State Department of Education. Her presentation is entitled: Teaching Standards-Based Science to Students with Disabilities. Ms. Bowman will review strategies that have been implemented across the State of Maryland to assist special education teachers with teaching science content aligned to the State Content Standards.
The Science-Abled Breakfast meeting will be held on Saturday, March 20 from 8 to 10 am. Tickets ($35) are available through SESD until February 28. If you would like to attend, please download and complete the registration form and mail it along with a $35 check made out to “Science Education for Students with Disabilities” to the following address:
